Joint Reserve Directorate (JRD)

The U.S. Joint Forces Command Joint Reserve Directorate (JRD), headquartered in Norfolk, Va., exists to administer and track the movement and operations of the USJFCOM reserve personnel assigned to the command. Made up of full-time support staff members, the JRD works as a directorate within USJFCOM and serves as a bridge between reserve component individuals, units and the active force - a one-stop-shop for the commander to access Reserve expertise.

The JRD controls all extended duty tours with JFCOM and its subordinate commands.

U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army and Air National Guard, and Coast Guard Reserve components augment and extend capabilities of the command to support U.S. Joint Forces Command's mission of leading the transformation of the U.S. armed forces.

The JRD represents the only reserve directorate that has been organized at the unified command level. Other joint commands have joint reserve units (JRUs), but USJFCOM instituted the directorate structure in the wake of the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001. It gives the four-star commander one point of access to assign the right reservist to the right job at the right time.

Generally speaking, the JRD is broken into four functional areas: the command group, the personnel division (including the resources and administration branches), the operations and plans division (including the training, security, budget and information management branches), and the mobilization reform division (including mobilization reform management, mobilization subject matter expert branch.)

Reservists are managed through their component services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard); USJFCOM active-duty directorates, J-1 through J-9; and through Special Operations Command - Joint Forces Command (SOCJFCOM), a subordinate command of USJFCOM.
