(NORFOLK, Va., - Jan. 22, 2010) -- Twelve personnel from U.S. Joint Forces Command’s (USJFCOM) Joint Enabling Capabilities Command (JECC) Joint Deployable Team (JDT) have been working around-the-clock to support the relief effort in Haiti.

JECC JDT members are providing support to U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) as they help provide security for the people in the aftermath of recent earthquakes in Haiti.

“They are doing what we prepare them to do,” said Navy Rear. Adm. Ted Carter, JECC commander. “They are supporting USSOUTHCOM and Joint Task Force-Haiti capabilities in planning and logistics.”

The team, led by Army Col. Mark Dewhurst, has been on the ground for almost a week working out of the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, said Carter.

“Our team brings expertise and experience,” Carter said.  “They give the joint task force commander help running and organizing their staff, as well as finding their battle rhythm.

“The main level of effort is in responding to saving lives and getting food, water and medical supplies to the people,” he added.  “Logistics becomes very crucial in these sustainment efforts.”

USSOUTHCOM requested another planner from the JDT who is, scheduled to arrive in Haiti soon.

Members of the JECC’s Joint Public Affairs Support Element and Joint Communications Support Element also are in Haiti as part of the relief effort.

“I’m proud of the willingness and strength of capabilities that all of the services at JECC have provided,” he added.  “We have responded well to everything that has been asked of us by USSOUTHCOM in supporting their efforts.”
