(NORFOLK, Va. - Jan. 21, 2010) -- A sailor assigned to U.S. Joint Forces Command's (USJFCOM) Joint Enabling Capabilities Command's Joint Communication Support Element (JCSE) at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., earned top honors as the U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) Senior Military Member of the 3rd Quarter.
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Josephine Patti, who leads troops as an early entry package team chief, where they take part in airborne operations, tactical evaluations and other training evolutions, as well as preparing to deploy. Her team goes through three phases - red, amber and green, with green phase being six month deployments.
Patti set out to better herself into being the best sailor she could be in 2009, bettering herself professionally and personally.
"Being stationed in this dynamic joint environment, I've pushed myself further than I ever had before," said Patti, a native of Queens, N.Y. "I confronted fears and reached goals that I never thought I would reach. I think I have set a positive example for my peers to follow."
Patti's commanding officer, Army Capt. Ramon Ruiz, Bravo Troop, 3rd Joint Communications Squadron commander, praised her professionalism and dedication to getting the mission accomplished.
"She stands above her peers in whatever task or mission she is given, regardless of difficulty," Ruiz said. "She is one of the most capable NCOs I have had the privilege of leading and serving with. She understands my intent and does everything in her power to complete the mission."
Army Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Powell, a colleague of Patti's who previously served as her supervisor, praised her drive and her willingness to lead from the front as characteristics that make her a great leader.
"She will not ask a subordinate to do something she has not already done or is not willing to do," he said. "She always goes out of the way to ensure that her subordinates are well taken care of."
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Ramses Rosa works for Patti and appreciates her ability to motivate and mold the team into a stronger unit.
"No isn't in her vocabulary," Rosa said, "so we try to find ways around obstacles that present themselves to us."
During her time at JCSE, Patti has become airborne qualified and Navy command fitness leader qualified. She also ran her first marathon and earned her bachelor's degree from Excelsior College.
"It feels good to know that all of my personal and professional accomplishments are being recognized by my senior leadership," she said, adding that setting attainable goals and living a happy, healthy lifestyle were her future goals, as well as earning her master's degree.
