(NORFOLK, Va. - Jan. 14, 2010) -- Personnel from U.S. Joint Forces Command's (USJFCOM) Joint Enabling Capabilities Command (JECC) deployed to Haiti to support relief operations following a 7.0-magnitude earthquake there.

Personnel from the Joint Communications Support Element (JCSE), the Joint Public Affairs Support Element (JPASE), and a joint deployable team (JDT) will augment U.S. Southern Command's medical support, engineering and operations capabilities. The JECC teams began leaving Wednesday. More than 25 USJFCOM service members and civilians currently are supporting the effort.

Navy Rear Adm. Walter E. Carter Jr., JECC commander, said the JECC teams were sent to fill urgent relief efforts quickly.

"We are rapidly sending joint personnel to assist Haitian people following this devastating earthquake," he said. "Our goal is to get down there to provide whatever support we can. Our support will help provide critical functions that were lost in this disaster."

The JCSE at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., provides command, control, communications and computer connectivity and support. The JPASE from Suffolk, Va., deploys joint media and communications personnel to provide public affairs capabilities.

The command's JDTs, also from Suffolk, have capabilities in four critical areas: operations; plans; information superiority and knowledge management; and logistics. All personnel are trained to support joint task force commanders during humanitarian operations.

USJFCOM's contribution to the relief effort is part of a larger effort by the Department of Defense, currently sending myriad military and civilian personnel, including one brigade from the Army's 82nd Airborne Division and Navy aircraft carrier U.S.S. Carl Vinson. The carrier was in route from Norfolk, Va., to San Diego when the quake struck southwest of Port-au-Prince at 4:53 p.m. local time Tuesday.
