(NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 5, 2009) -- An Air Force master sergeant earned top honors as U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM)'s Senior Air Force Element Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2009.
Master Sgt. Arturo Betty, a vehicle maintenance superintendent with the Joint Communication Support Element's (JCSE) Communication Support Detachment (CSD), MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., credits his selection to his troops' excellence and proficiency.
"I couldn't do it alone," said Betty, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. "I allow my troops to take on tasks, with freedom to make things happen their way. I try to lead by example, letting them get the mission accomplished."
Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Thomas Keyser, CSD first sergeant, said Betty's strong rapport with his troops and steadfast work ethic help make him one of the best service members he has had the privilege of working with.
"The first thing that comes to mind is loyalty," Keyser said. "He is really the heartbeat of the JCSE, the first one in and the last to leave. He has the ability to work well with anyone, with an easy-going demeanor that helps people relate to him for leadership and advice. Everything that happens here gravitates through him."
Betty, who is approaching his 20th anniversary in the Air Force, encourages young leaders to have faith in their abilities and to interact often with their fellow troops.
"Try to lead by example and listen to your subordinates. Place yourself in their shoes and also the shoes of your leaders," Betty said. "It gives you the position to make good decisions and see things from their position."
One of Betty's airmen said he feels his leadership abilities make him better at what he does and is preparing him to one day lead at a higher level.
"He is a great supervisor, very dedicated and caring about his people," said Air Force Tech Sgt. Craig Bowers, JCSE vehicle management and analysis noncommissioned officer-in-charge. "He gets people on the same page and united. He follows up on issues and makes sure they are taken care of. His leadership example makes me want to be a better leader."
