(NORFOLK, Va. -- March 11, 2009) U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) recently named Samuel Henry as the command's Junior Civilian of the Year for 2008.

As Joint Enabling Capabilities Command's (JECC) support division logistics chief, Henry synchronizes logistics requirements at the organizational and operational level within the JECC.

Henry, who has been with the command for more than two and a half years, said his greatest accomplishment this past year was participating in the deployment of Task Force Ramadi, a tailored task force of more than 100 military and civilian personnel from all services and forward deployed to Iraq in 2008.

"I try to do my best in all endeavors, and there was an event where I had the opportunity to get behind it fully and showcase what we as logisticians bring to the JECC," Henry said. "The support required for the deployment was logistics intensive and it was just an exciting time to come to work and do a lot of things that I had been trained to do."

Henry explained that Task Force Ramadi not only had members of the JECC, formerly known as the Standing Joint Force Headquarters directorate, but also personnel from directorates throughout USJFCOM who joined together to form the task force.

"We still had to discover a lot of things on how to put together a force that size, train it, equip it and get it out the door in order to meet the latest arrival date in country," Henry explained.

Henry coordinated movement of the task force from here to Fort Campbell, Ky., for pre-deployment training, and then into theater upon completion of the training. He ensured the task force had everything to complete a successful mission from the Rapid Fielding Initiative kits with everything from basics like socks and boots to laser target location systems and advanced combat helmets.

Raymond Bradbury, JECC support division chief, said Henry exemplifies the command's mission daily.

"I picked Samuel Henry for his 'customer first' attitude and ability to reach out across the services and U.S. Joint Forces Command to equip and deploy the members of Task Force Ramadi," Bradbury said. "He also was very innovative in the way he worked the redeployment of the task force and reconciliation of their equipment - all items that positively impacted the JECC's ability to complete its task, and established a better understanding of what it takes to organize, train, equip, and deploy joint units."

Henry, a Jasper, Fla. native, volunteers his spare time as a Chesapeake youth basketball coach and provides his church with audio-visual support and manages its Web site.

As part of the award, Henry received a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award, a certificate of commendation, and a $2,500 award.
