An Air Force officer serving in Afghanistan will become the next director of joint capability development (J-8) at U.S. Joint Forces Command. By USJFCOM Public Affairs (WASHINGTON - May 30, 2008) -- An Air Force officer serving in Afghanistan will become the next director of joint capability development (J-8) at U.S. Joint Forces Command. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley announced today Maj. Gen. Kevin J. Kennedy, currently serving as the director of Air Combat Command's Air Component Coordination Element in Kabul, Afghanistan, will join the Norfolk-based command. As the J-8, Kennedy will serves as lead joint integrator for all of DoD's uniformed components and oversees the Joint Command and Control Capability Portfolio Management program. J-8 works with the combatant commanders, the Joint Staff, services, and other federal departments and agencies to combine all of the military's capabilities into a single focused effort, connecting current capabilities to future concepts. Kennedy, a 1978 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, has extensive experience in B-52 Stratofortress as an instructor and squadron operations officer, with the B-1B Lancer as a command-level staff officer, and in the B-2 Spirit as a deputy operations group commander. He has commanded at the squadron, group and wing levels, including the 40th Air Expeditionary Wing, as well as the Air Force Global Cyberspace Integration Center. His previous joint experience includes a tour as U.S. Strategic Command's Director for Plans and Policy and on the Joint Strategic Target Planning Staff. Additionally, he augmented the U.S. Air Forces in Europe staff during Operation Allied Force. Kennedy is a command pilot with 3,600 hours, including 145 combat hours in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In addition to his degree from the Air Force Academy, he holds master's degrees from Central Michigan University and the Naval War College. He also has attended the College of Naval Command and Staff and participated in the National Security Fellowship and the Program for Senior Executives in National and International Security, both at Harvard. He has earned awards of the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with silver and bronze oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and the Joint Service and Air Force Achievement Medals. |
