USJFCOM to co-host 2007 industry symposium U.S. Joint Forces Command will partner with the National Defense Industrial Association to host the "Hampton Roads... Supporting Joint Force Operations" 2007 symposium to raise industry and academia's awareness of joint warfighting challenges and solutions. By Robert Pursell (NORFOLK, Va. - April 16, 2007) -- U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) will partner with the National Defense Industrial Association, Greater Hampton Roads Chapter (NDIA-GHRC) to host this year's industry symposium to raise industry and academia's awareness of joint warfighting challenges and solutions. The two-day symposium will be held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, in Hampton, Va., July 31 to Aug. 1. The focus will be on highlighting Hampton Roads' contributions to joint military, coalition, and interagency operations. USJFCOM's Office of Research and Technology Applications (ORTA) will take the lead in organizing the symposium on the USJFCOM side. Dr. Russ Richards, who heads ORTA, explained the importance of the symposium. "It's viewed as a tech transfer event. It's a very good way to get the word out to industry about how they can help us, and that leads to industry coming back to us and saying, 'we'd like the opportunity to come in and talk to you about our capabilities,'" he said. "It's a very key event for us in generating the contacts and helping us discover interesting partners. Richards said the symposium will serve as a venue for discussion of capability advancements and provide an opportunity for USJFCOM to tell industry and academia some of the joint warfighting capability needs. Since the symposium will include an exhibit space, industry will have an opportunity to showcase their capabilities to the military audience. Throughout the symposium, attendees will be encouraged to participate in a number of panel discussions focused on supporting the joint warfighter. Question and answer sessions will follow. Richards said USJFCOM and NDIA have plans to expand the event this year. "The theme is 'Hampton Roads…Supporting Joint Force Operations,' so we're focusing on the Hampton Roads area," he said. "It's not just USJFCOM that will have the opportunity to tell industry where we need help, but we're inviting all of the major military organizations in the Hampton Roads area so they will have the opportunity as well." In addition to representatives from industry, symposium organizers expect representatives from Air Combat Command, Training and Doctrine Command, Fleet Forces Command, Marine Forces Command, NATO's Allied Command Transformation, and the U.S. Coast Guard's Atlantic Area to attend. Richards said this year local Hampton Roads organizations will be invited to tell how they support joint force operations. This allows USJFCOM to showcase the partnership between the military organizations and state and local organizations. Also, new this year will be an NDIA awards dinner to honor exemplary service in support of joint force operations by individuals and organizations. USJFCOM Commander Air Force Gen. Lance Smith will also acknowledge USJFCOM Cooperative Research and Development Agreement partners at the dinner. This is the seventh year that USJFCOM and NDIA have worked together to co-host such an event in Hampton Roads.
