Army brigadier general to assume operations
director post
The
assistant division commander for operations for the Army's
82nd Airborne Division will soon become U.S. Joint Forces
Command's director for operations, plans, logistics and
engineering.

(WASHINGTON, D.C. - May 6, 2005) -- Chief of Staff of the
Army Gen. Peter Schoomaker announced today the assistant
division commander for operations for the Army's 82nd Airborne
Division will soon become U.S. Joint Forces Command's director
for operations, plans, logistics and engineering.
Army Brig. Gen. Michael Ferriter will replace Rear
Adm. John M. Bird later this summer.
The general will serve as the principal advisor to the USJFCOM
commander on all military operational matters that affect
forces in the U.S. including command and control of assigned
U.S. military forces worldwide.
His staff, known as J-3/4, direct, plan, coordinate, schedule,
and control the joint operations and inter-theater deployments
of all USJFCOM forces.
J-3/4 is the command nerve center for providing joint force
support. They work closely with other commanders to ensure
appropriate forces are ready to respond anytime, anywhere
in the world.
The directorate coordinates forces for combat and peacekeeping
operations, humanitarian assistance and also U.S. military
support to civil authorities and domestic disaster response
like wildfire control.
Ferriter graduated from The Citadel in 1979 and has commanded
troops in both the 82nd Airborne Division and the 75th Ranger
Regiment.
Previous joint assignments includes working at Joint Forces
Command, first serving as the deputy director for operations
and plans and then working as the executive assistant to
the commander.
In addition to his bachelor of science degree in business
administration, Ferriter has attended the U.S. Army Command
and General Staff College and served as a senior service
college fellow at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy
at Tufts University.
His decorations include awards of the Defense Superior Service
Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritotious Service,
Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation
Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
