U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) employs a variety of modeling and simulation (M&S) technologies to accomplish its joint force trainer and experimentation missions.

Advances in M&S create opportunities for the United States and its partners to effectively test and train on the full range of joint capabilities. USJFCOM is a recognized leader in M&S technology, garnering numerous awards, most recently the 2005 Government Computer News Agency Award for innovation in Secure Wireless Architecture, the 2005 E-Gov Institute award for Innovative Knowledge Management Best Practices in Public Sector Organizations, and the 2004 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) top award for urban combat modeling and simulation efforts.

The command uses realistic computer-generated battlefield models and other types of simulation to support joint force training. It uses these models to practice the movement or coordination of forces, to provide an operational background to a staff training event, and to augment live forces to simulate a larger operational environment.

The intent is not to replace actual experience, but to employ M&S as a more cost-effective means to conduct higher-level events more frequently.

M&S allows participants to experience a higher level of joint experimentation and joint training at a cost-savings. By using systems distributed around the globe, more people can participate in a greater number of events and work to develop concepts and conduct joint training without the burden of collocating.

The command uses M&S to support numerous activities across the command, including development of the Joint National Training Capability (JNTC) and improving joint urban operations (JUO) training. JNTC provides an enhanced method of training using live, virtual and constructive (L-V-C) training environments. Live forces are real people in real locations, while virtual forces are real people in simulators. Constructive forces are simulated entities in simulated environments.

USJFCOM works closely with numerous partners to improve joint training and concept development, including:
• The services
• Combatant commands
• The interagency community
• Multinational partners
• National laboratories
• Academia
• Industry

The command uses numerous M&S tools to accomplish its mission, including:
Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF) – A simulation which generates entity-level simulations;
Joint Conflict and Tactical Simulation (JCATS) – An environment used extensively for training and real-world mission rehearsals;
Joint Theater Level Simulation (JTLS) – An interactive, computer-assisted simulation tool that focuses on the operational level of war;
Joint Multi-Resolution Model – A computer federation which uses JTLS and JCATS as its core models.
