Multinational Information Sharing and the
Cross-Domain Collaborative Information Environment
Multinational information sharing (MNIS) is the ability
of United States forces to communicate with allies and coalition
partners, an essential element for successful future joint
military operations.
USJFCOM’s
Joint Concept Development and Experimentation
Directorate (J9) began working toward a near-term MNIS solution
in February 2004 to support warfighters operating in a coalition
environment. The result of that effort is the Cross Domain
Collaborative Information Environment (CDCIE).
USJFCOM developed CDCIE using a mix of open-source and commercial
products to create a suite of standards-based services that
share and manage information simultaneously between different
classification domains.
CDCIE
is designed to run in today’s environment and
is a building block for future information infrastructure,
adhering to the same basic standards that guide net-centric
enterprise services development.
A cross-domain solution provides a trusted gateway between
two or more networks of different security classifications
to allow information-sharing. It typically has some additional
capabilities, such as permitting only authorized data to
transit the gateway, preventing inadvertent disclosure of
information, and prohibiting unauthorized users.
CDCIE addresses the challenge of multinational and interagency
information sharing and maximizes infrastructure flexibility
and investment.
It also supports peacekeeping and humanitarian operations,
promotes standards, emphasizes interoperability, and reduces
the cost of collaboration.
The non-proprietary system will enable cost-effective multinational
information sharing in both single- and cross-domain environments.
CDCIE provides the warfighter the capability of cross-domain
collaboration and automatic data transfer from machine to
machine. It also features unique security-enhanced office
automation tools that provide a method to safely change documents
for release to lower classification levels.
CDCIE consists of the following components:
Cross
domain text chat and whiteboarding with language translation;
Cross domain audio;
Cross domain web services;
Cross domain extended markup language (XML) guard;
and secure save and document redaction.
