Capstone
Joint Operations Module
The Capstone Joint Operations Module (JOM) is four days
of a six-week course for newly selected flag and general
officers, sponsored by the National Defense University (NDU)
at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C. and executed
by U.S. Joint Forces Command's (USJFCOM) Joint
Warfighting Center in Suffolk, Va.
The Capstone program ensures newly selected flag and general
officers understand the fundamentals of joint doctrine, how
to integrate the elements of national power to accomplish
national security and military strategies, and how joint,
interagency, and multinational operations support national
strategic goals and objectives.
Participants travel extensively as part of the program,
visiting key U.S. military commands in the United States
and abroad, where they interact with commanders, U.S. ambassadors
and embassy personnel, and the senior political and military
leaders of foreign governments.
The Capstone JOM uses plenary and small group sessions,
guest speakers and video teleconferences with commanders
in the field to examine elements that effect current and
future joint task force operations.
The four-day module helps prepare leaders to employ U.S.
forces more effectively in joint and multinational operations.
Participants speak with retired flag and general officers
about their real-world experiences and learn about the process
of setting up and operating a joint task force.
USJFCOM and NDU also co-sponsor the five-day Pinnacle course
for prospective two- and three-star joint force commanders
and the Keystone course for command senior enlisted leaders.
The Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization
Act of 1986 requires all rising active duty general and flag
officers attend Capstone. DoD Senior Executive Service (SES)
employees may also attend.
