Sgt. Major Battaglia holds the highest-ranking enlisted position in the command. He serves as the principal enlisted advisor to the commander who is responsible for maximizing present and future military capabilities of the United States by leading the transformation of joint forces in the areas of providing joint forces to combatant commands, joint training, joint interoperability, and joint innovation and experimentation. A native of New Orleans, he entered the Marine Corps in September of 1979 and has served at multiple levels in the infantry to include squad leader, platoon sergeant, mortar section leader, and platoon commander. Other career assignments include drill instructor, and company gunnery sergeant. As a gunnery sergeant, he served on the Royal Marine Exchange Program, graduating from the Royal Marines Commando Course and with a follow-on assignment at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone, England. As a first sergeant, he served with the MEU Service Support Group 26, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit and 1st Battalion 6th Marines, JTF-160 at Guantanamo Bay Cuba. As a command sergeant major, he served with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252, Weapons Training Battalion Quantico, Va., Marine Barracks Washington D.C. During Operation Iraqi Freedom he served as the sergeant major for the Regimental Combat Team 8, and his most recent tour as sergeant major for 2d Marine Division and Second Marine Expeditionary Force (Fwd). His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Bronze Star (second award) with Combat "V", Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. |
