Joint Irregular Warfare Center

The USJFCOM Joint Irregular Warfare Center (JIWC) was established in 2008 to proactively coordinate, prioritize, provide subject matter expertise and partner on all irregular warfare (IW) matters.

USJFCOM’s goal is to ensure the Department of Defense (DoD) is as effective in IW as it is in conventional warfare.  USJFCOM will focus on the establishment of IW as a general purpose force (GPF) core competency in order to ensure success in the full spectrum of operations of today and the future.

The JIWC integrates IW activities across USJFCOM directorates, DoD, multinational and interagency partners for joint IW concept development and experimentation, training, doctrine and capability development to ensure joint IW capabilities meet combatant commander campaign and complex contingency requirements. Additionally, the JIWC executes USJFCOM’s responsibilities as the DoD executive agent for joint urban operations.

As part of its mission, the JIWC will lead or support:

• The collaborative development of joint IW-relevant doctrine
• The exploration of new concepts and capabilities as part of the joint concept development and experimentation program
• The collaborative development of joint standards for GPF IW-relevant training and readiness for individuals and units.
• The identification of tracking requirements for critical IW skills and experience
• The identification of joint-IW relevant capabilities and recommend priorities for capability development
• The annual assessment of the U.S. Armed Forces’ GPF proficiency and readiness for IW

The JIWC will collaborate closely with multinational and interagency partners, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations/Low-Intensity Conflict and Interdependent Capabilities, the Joint Staff, the services, combatant commands and the intelligence community.
