Command, Control, Communications, and Computer (C4) Systems Directorate (J6)

U.S. Joint Forces Command’s (USJFCOM) Command, Control, Communications, and Computer (C4) Systems Directorate (J6) empowers the command to accomplish its mission by providing dependable information technology networks and generalized communications support.

J6 also provides the joint task force commander with communications and information technology solutions to support the command and control (C2) decision cycle, an information assurance program to protect against network attack, and ready-trained joint component communications personnel.

Some of J6’s major responsibilities include:
• Management of the USJFCOM enterprise network.
• The conduct of financial and policy analysis for information technology investment, resource, and program management across the enterprise.
• Service as the command’s chief information officer.
• Support of combatant commanders’ C4 needs through the sourcing of mission requirements with specialized subject matter expertise.
• Day-to-day management of satellite resources and gateway access for assigned units.

Major J6 transformation initiatives include:

• Development of a joint data integration capability which integrates and correlates air, ground, maritime, and other sensor data to provide a comprehensive common operational picture;
• Transitioning the Global Broadcast Service to incorporate Internet protocol-based capabilities, providing enhanced access to high-demand, high-bandwidth products for the warfighter;
• Satellite communications and teleport capability to meet the joint task force and component commanders operational and training requirements;
• Integrating collaborative tools into the command’s daily business and becoming a combatant commander advocate for a joint approach to service-oriented architectures;
• Contributing to the development of a concept of operations for cyberspace operations;
• And working with the Joint Knowledge Development and Distribution Capability program office in deploying Joint Knowledge Online, an enterprise portal providing joint training through distance learning.

The directorate also works to increase the ability of the services to work together and with multinational partners. Major directorate interoperability initiatives include:
• Oversight of the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration;
• Joint User Interoperability Communications Exercise;
• DoD Interoperability Communications Exercise;
• Streamlining multinational information sharing;
• And providing spectrum management services to assigned forces in support of current operations, training, counter improvised explosive devices efforts, and various testing and evaluation events.
