About Us

U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) is one of DoD’s ten combatant commands and has several key roles in transforming the U.S. military’s capabilities.

Headquartered in Norfolk, Va., the command oversees a force of more than 1.16 million dedicated men and women, spanning USJFCOM's service component commands and subordinate activities. The command is comprised of active and reserve personnel from each branch of the armed forces, civil servants and contract employees.

USJFCOM’s commander oversees the command's four major mission areas:

Joint Concept Development and Experimentation – Joint concept development and experimentation is the cornerstone for developing future joint warfighting concepts and capabilities. The Unified Command Plan (UCP) identifies USJFCOM’s key role in transforming U.S. military forces. To accomplish this mission, the command develops new concepts and tests them through experimentation and, in collaboration with other combatant commands, services and agencies, recommends solutions to better integrate their warfighting capabilities. The command also collaborates with and builds on best practices from industry and academia.

Joint Training – As DoD’s joint force trainer, USJFCOM prepares joint task force commanders and staffs to execute their missions in a joint environment. These ever-improving joint task force preparation events include mission rehearsals for units deploying around the world as well as humanitarian missions. They are conducted with a wide variety of partners including interagency, multinational, and nongovernmental organizations. In conjunction with the development of new doctrine, USJFCOM collects, analyzes and shares feedback from the warfighter. USJFCOM hosts both the Joint National Training Capability and the Joint Knowledge Development and Distribution Capability, two of the three enabling capabilities of DoD’s Training Transformation initiative. In a typical year, USJFCOM coordinates and supports commanders through more than 70 joint training events, involving 46,000 participants.

Joint Capabilities Development – USJFCOM leads the integration of solutions to today’s joint warfighter interoperability challenges. The command works closely with combatant commanders, the services and other government agencies to identify and resolve joint warfighting deficiencies. The command’s work in this area is one of the most pressing requirements to transform legacy forces and establish an integrated joint force. During recent operations, USJFCOM brought multiple force identification systems which were not interoperable into one cohesive view of all friendly forces on the battlefield.

Joint Force Provider – USJFCOM’s role of primary conventional force provider, established in the UCP in 2004, assigned nearly all conventional forces based in the continental U.S. to the command. With that responsibility, the command helps national decision makers make informed choices on supporting operations, assists military commanders to identify potential readiness problems and develop appropriate strategies and maintain the nation's forces at the highest possible level of readiness. In 2006, USJFCOM coordinated the deployment of more than 290,000 personnel in support of combatant commanders and DoD support agencies.
